Accurate interface-tracking for arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian schemes

چکیده
preprint numerics no. 3/2008 norwegian university of science and technology trondheim, norway We present a new method for tracking an interface immersed in a given velocity field. The method is particularly relevant to the simulation of unsteady free surface problems using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) framework. The new method has been constructed with two goals in mind: (i) to be able to accurately follow the interface; and (ii) to maintain a good point distribution for the grid points along the interface. The method combines information from a pure Lagrangian approach with information from an ALE approach. No integration backwards in time is needed; instead, the new method relies of the solution of several pure convection problems along the interface in order to obtain the relevant information. The new method offers flexibility in terms of how an "optimal" point distribution should be defined. We have been able to verify first, second, and third order temporal accuracy for the new method by solving two-dimensional model problems with known solutions.

Accurate interface-tracking of surfaces in three dimensions for arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian schemes
We extend the computational method presented in [1] for tracking an interface immersed in a given velocity field to three spatial dimensions. The proposed method is particularly relevant to the simulation of unsteady free surface problems using the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian framework, and has been constructed with two goals in mind: (i) to be able to accurately follow the interface; and (ii...
متن کاملDynamic Fracture Analysis Using an Uncoupled Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian Finite Element Formulation
This paper deals with the implementation of an efficient Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation for the three dimensional finite element modeling of mode I self-similar dynamic fracture process. Contrary to the remeshing technique, the presented algorithm can continuously advance the crack with the one mesh topology. The uncoupled approach is employed to treat the equations. So, each t...
متن کاملRHALE: A MMALE Shock Physics Code for Arbitrary Meshes*
This paper describes RHALE, a two and three-dimensional, multi-material, arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (MMALE) shock physics code written in C++. RHALE is the successor to CTH, Sandia’s 3-D Eulerian shock physics code, and will be capable of solving problems that CTH cannot adequately address. RHALE employs a three step solution algorithm for the equations of motion: (1) a Lagrangian step capab...
متن کاملA Hybrid Lagrangian-Eulerian Approach for Two-Phase Flows with Fully Resolved Interfaces
A hybrid Lagrangian-Eulerian (hLE) scheme, combining a particle-based, mesh-free technique with a finitevolume flow solver, is developed for direct simulations of two-phase flows. This approach merges the naturally adaptive nature of particle-based schemes, for efficient representation of the interface between two media, with the relative flexibility offered by grid-based solvers for complex fl...
متن کاملALE Mesh Updating using Mesh Optimisation
Accurate numerical simulation of problems in fluid mechanics requires using a method whereby the mesh can track free surfaces or fluid-solid or fluidfluid interfaces whilst coping with large distortions of the continuum. Such methods are referred to as Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) methods and may be furthered studied in [1]. In order for the mesh to adapt to the deforming domain, a mesh ...
